Writing a business plan is a very important part of opening a franchise.  Some exceptional franchises, will not only assist you, but will very actively participate in the writing process, while others will provide guidance upon request.

In any case, it is a valuable exercise to think about a business plan prior to even committing to a franchise system.  One resource that may be useful to prospective franchisees is the U.S. Small Business Administration.  The SBA has a Business Plan Template that can help you think through many of the issues that face new business owners.
